Delete your Opto account

Sometimes you're ready to move on, and we want that to be as straightforward as opening an account in the first place. This page explains how to request deletion of your Opto account and what happens to your data when you do. For more on how Opto handles your information generally, see our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

If you have questions at any point, email us at contact@optofinancial.com.

How to delete your account

You have two ways to request deletion:

Option 1: Delete from within the Opto app (recommended)

The fastest way is directly in the app:

  1. Open Opto on your phone
  2. Tap Profile in the navigation
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account
  4. Confirm your decision when prompted

Your account is disabled immediately, and your data is permanently deleted on the timeline described below.

Option 2: Request deletion by email

If you can't access the app, email us directly:

  • Send an email to contact@optofinancial.com
  • Subject line: "Delete my Opto account"
  • Send from the email address associated with your Opto account so we can verify your identity

We'll process your request within 30 days and email you to confirm when deletion is complete.

What gets deleted

When you delete your Opto account, we permanently remove:

  • Your account credentials (email, password)
  • Your profile information (name, partnership status, demographic details)
  • All connected financial accounts and transactions stored in Opto
  • Plaid access tokens used to connect your bank accounts
  • Your AI coaching conversation history
  • Goals, budgets, and plans you created
  • Premarital coaching journey responses and module completions
  • Notification settings and preferences

Deletion applies across all Opto surfaces — including the core Opto app and the Opto Premarital experience. Deleting your account in one removes it from the other.

What's retained, why, and for how long

In a few specific cases, we retain limited data after you delete your account. Here's exactly what and why:

Encrypted backups (up to 30 days)

For security and disaster recovery, our database creates encrypted backups on a rolling schedule. Your data may persist in these backups for up to 30 days before being permanently overwritten. Backups are encrypted and not used for any other purpose.

Anonymized product analytics (indefinite)

We retain aggregated, anonymized metrics — for example, "X users completed Module 3" or "average session length is Y minutes" — to improve the product. These contain no personal identifiers and cannot be linked back to you.

Legal and fraud prevention records (up to 7 years where required)

If we are legally required to retain certain records — for tax, fraud prevention, or compliance reasons — we'll keep only the minimum necessary data for the legally required period. In most cases this does not apply to typical users.

A note on couples accounts

Opto is built for couples, which means some of your data may be visible to your partner. Here's how deletion works in that context:

  • You can only delete your own account. You cannot delete your partner's account on their behalf.
  • Data ownership follows whoever created it. If you connected a bank account or created a financial goal, that data belongs to your account and will be deleted when your account is deleted. Your partner will lose access to it.
  • Your partner's data is unaffected. Anything your partner created remains theirs and stays in their account.
  • Coaching conversations and journey responses you initiated are deleted. Conversations your partner initiated remain in their account.

If you'd like to talk through what deletion would mean for your partner before proceeding, you're welcome to email us first.

Third-party services

Opto uses a small set of third-party services to deliver the product. Here's what happens with each when you delete your account:

  • Plaid (bank account connections): We automatically revoke your access tokens via Plaid's API when you delete your account, so Opto can no longer access your accounts. Plaid may retain your data per Plaid's End User Privacy Policy. To request deletion directly from Plaid, visit my.plaid.com.
  • PostHog (product analytics): We call PostHog's deletion API when you delete your account, removing identifiable analytics data associated with you.
  • Supabase (data storage): Your data is deleted from our database. Backups follow the 30-day schedule described above.
  • Google Gemini (AI coaching): Conversations are processed in real time and are not used to train Google's models per Google's API terms, which prohibit using API data for model training. Deleted conversations are removed from our systems.
  • FinGoal (transaction enrichment): Enrichment data tied to your transactions is deleted alongside your transaction data.

Timeline

  • Immediately: Your account is disabled and can no longer be logged into.
  • Within 30 days: All identifiable data is permanently deleted from our active systems.
  • Up to 30 days after that: Data rolls off encrypted backups.
  • Confirmation: We'll send a final email to your registered address when deletion is complete.

Formal CCPA, GDPR, or other regulatory data requests follow the timelines specified in our Privacy Policy.
